This Sad Iron by Dubuque Potts is in excellent condition. The separation of handle and iron is fully functional.
History:
In 1870, a woman by the name of Mary Florence Potts, in Ottumwa, Iowa, was awarded a patent for a SAD iron that came to a point on both ends which allowed women to iron in either direction. The top plate screws onto bottom and oval with cross-bar where handle attaches; You pull up on a wood knob to release the handle.
in 1871, she introduced a SAD Iron with a detachable, wooden handle. This invention was a big hit with housewives because it was invented by a woman and was widely marketed in magazines and five-and-dime stores in the growing post Civil War era.
