This Sad Iron and Trivet have marking that are difficult to decipher. Its design leads me to believe it was manufactured in the earlier 1800's . The cast Iron design including the handle would have made it hot to handle and use. Heated on a stove the Trivet would have been necessary for a homemaker to not burn herself. This Sad Iron predates Mary Potts design and patten.
"Flat irons were also called sad irons or smoothing irons. The sad in sad iron (or sadiron) is an old word for solid, and in some contexts this name suggests something bigger and heavier than a flat iron. The metal handles were as hot as the iron and had to be gripped with a pad or thick rag." M
